Summary: The Senior Patient Access Volunteer Development Manager will play a key leadership role in Patient Access volunteer programming and will provide staff supervision.  This individual will also serve as the leader in his/her designated area for the development of a robust network of grassroots volunteers and organizational partners. By focusing on volunteer capacity and increasing engagement, the position serves as a force multiplier, contributing to the development of a nationwide groundswell of supporters for the LLS mission.  The individual in this position will play a key role in facilitating the organization’s renewed commitment to cultivating tailored opportunities for volunteer involvement and leadership.  In addition, this individual will ensure the success of others in the field via staff supervision.

The Senior Patient Access Volunteer Development Manager will oversee the LLS volunteer structure in his/her geographic area including key identified volunteer roles.  The Senior Patient Access Volunteer Development Manager will be principally in charge of identifying individuals to fill the aforementioned roles, and provide substantive support, active management and stewardship. Successful execution will also involve significant collaboration with LLS field, campaign, and donor development staff to ensure integration and efficiency of lead-sharing and opportunity cultivation.


Reports To: Senior Director of Patient Access

Supervises: Patient Access staff at Manager level


Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Create and maintain deep engagement with, and support for, patients and their families throughout their cancer journey, providing ongoing support, education and access to quality care;
  • Develop and support a strong volunteer infrastructure (with recruitment, training, recognition, retention and evaluation components) to implement strategies that enhance quality of life of blood cancer patients and their families;
  • Drawing on this volunteer infrastructure, connect patients and families to the full spectrum of resources provided by LLS’s Patient Access Department.
  • Provide leadership, direction and management of Patient Access Volunteer Development staff.
  • Promote Information Specialists in LLS’s Information Resource Center (IRC) as an essential point of initial contact, inside and outside of LLS, for disease, treatment and support information;
  • Ensure activities are recorded in Salesforce to comply with timely data documentation and all reporting requirements;
  • Implement community-based patient education programs, with the support of volunteers, in select markets and drive participation in national educational and support programs;  
  • Conduct professional outreach with the support of volunteers to build awareness of LLS in the community and increase utilization of LLS resources;
  • Assess the education, resource, and service needs of patients and providers in the designated service area;
  • Develop and maintain active partnerships with community based organizations, professional healthcare associations, healthcare professional leaders and industry to create opportunities for collaboration;
  • Collaborate and communicate with LLS internal stakeholders, including chapter executive directors, campaign & chapter staff, and national office staff to ensure joint planning, mutually beneficial support, and effective advancement toward LLS’s overarching goals and strategies;
  • Engage patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals in LLS’s campaign, donor development and mission-related activities;
  • Develop extensive knowledge of other LLS mission areas (research, public policy/advocacy) to become the local “mission expert” for chapter staff, patients, donors, and supporters;
  • Be an active liaison between chapter(s) staff and advocacy to identify advocates and patient stories;
  • Manage financial resources that are allocated for your activities;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education & Experience Requirements: 

  • BA or BS; advanced degree preferred
  • 3-7 years of progressively responsible related experience;
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Public health, advocacy, or social services background preferred

        Position Requirements: 

  • Experience and skills in problem solving, relationship and network building, volunteer development and educational programming
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be able to articulate the LLS Mission (Research, Patient & Professional Programs, Advocacy/Policy) to a wide audience 
  • Account management experience a plus
  • Experience working in oncology health care delivery settings or in the community with oncology patients preferred
  • Strong problem-solving, priority-setting and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently, thrive under pressure and perform multiple tasks
  • Broad cultural competency
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and articulate science-based policy goals
  • Fundraising experience a plus
  • Experience working in a matrix environment a plus
  • Strong computer skills required 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Position may require 25% - 50% travel; night and weekend work may be required

  • Improve Net Profitability: Maximize net income from existing channels through prioritization, organizational alignment and optimization of resources.
  • Diversify Revenue: Identify and develop high-growth, high-margin revenue opportunities focusing on volunteer initiatives, eRevenue, donor development and new partner development.
  • Enhance Organizational Performance: Assess resources, improve productivity and optimize organizational capacity.
